CELEBRATING PHILIPPINE INGENUITY IN CULTURE<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve heard the saying \u201cWhat\u2019s good for the planet makes for good design and good business\u201d. Not only are natural fabrics more beautiful and get better with age, but these outperform most synthetic materials.\u00a0 The fashion collection entitled Balik-Saya were innovative inspirations from young designers who created designs using local materials. This encourages creativity and ingenuity, implementing designs based on eco-friendly materials. A collaborative effort of the Intramuros Administration and the beauteous Manila\u2019s 5th<\/sup> District Representative, Cristal Bagatsing, the event was held at the newly opened National Museum of Natural History; the venue provided a dramatic background to the fashion collection, which now serves as a cultural platform for exhibitions and presentations.<\/p>\n

Cristal said in her welcome speech: \u201cNow you see the beauty of the Fifth District which is rich in history, culture and art: Intramuros, the National Museum, Rizal Park, National Library.\u00a0 But behind these and outside of this beauty, there is a beast of burden which is poverty\u201d. The event was attended by prominent locals from government, business, fashion and society. This year\u2019s panel of judges included: Inno Sotto, National Museum Director Jeremy Barns, Rep. Lucy Torres Gomez, Criselda Lontok, Lulu Tan Gan, Jo-Ann Bitagcol, Randy Ortiz, Dean of SoFA Design Institute Tobias Guggenheimer, Tweetie de Leon Gonzalez and Rajo Laurel.\u00a0 Cristal believes that by promoting her district via tourism, it would mean more job opportunities and one need not look far to help and touch people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n

The fashion show commenced with the capsule collection of Jojie Lloren, fashion designer and project mentor. Special award winners were: Christian Bulasag from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila- Fashion+Arts+Business Creatives (F.A.B) award. He received P100,000 scholarship for having the most potential to be one of the best future Filipino designers. Vianka Lorraine Castro from St. Scholastica\u2019s College was the SoFA choice and received the Fashion Visionary Award; and lastly, Rana Vashti Sacramento from St. Scholastica\u2019s College, who received the Rustan\u2019s Iconic award, for the most promising in retail design.<\/p>\n

The winners for the Balik-Saya design competition were the following:\u00a0 5th<\/sup> place Margaux Gustilo from St. Scholatica\u2019s College with P20,000 cash prize;\u00a0\u00a0 4th<\/sup> place Lou Galang from St. Scholastica\u2019s College P25,000cash ; 3rd<\/sup> place Somera Rana from Colegio de San Juan de Letran with P40,000 ; 2nd<\/sup> place Alaine Isabelle Leones\u00a0 from St. Scholastica\u2019s College with P60,000; grand winner, Mariah Parayray from St. Scholastica\u2019s College-P100,000 cash, apprenticeship in Rustan\u2019s SoFA Design Institute extensive workshop.\u00a0 Balik Saya was presented in partnership with National Museum of the Philippines, TESDA, Rustan\u2019s,\u00a0 Destilerria Limtuaco, Illustrado, The Bayleaf Hotels\u00a0 and SoFA Design Institute.<\/p>\n
