A Magical Evening<\/p>\n

The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra pays tribute to Sen.Edgardo Angara<\/p>\n

The illustrious senator Ed\u00adgardo Javier Angara<\/strong>, who established the Philippine Phil\u00adharmonic Orchestra (PPO) Society Inc. in 1985, was recently accorded a spe\u00adcial tribute by the PPO, in cooperation with the Cul\u00adtural Center of the Philip\u00adpines (CCP) and the Uni\u00adversity of the Philippines. Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra Society presi\u00addent Nedy Tantoco <\/strong>head\u00aded this invitational concert, with maestro Yoshika\u00adzu Fukumura <\/strong>as conduc\u00adtor. Two commemorative sculptures by famed artists Ramon Orli\u00adna <\/strong>and Impy Pilapil <\/strong>were presented by the organizers to the family of the late senator, represented by his gen\u00adteel wife Gloria Angara <\/strong>and dash\u00ading son Sen. Sonny Angara<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Internationally acclaimed pianist and former CCP president Raul Su\u00adnico <\/strong>rendered George Gersh\u00adwin<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cConcerto in F\u201d together with the PPO. It was significant that National Artist for mu\u00adsic Dr. Ramon P. Santos <\/strong>conducted the PPO with his composition \u201cAwit ng Pagdiriwang,\u201d a piece he made for the inauguration of Senator Angara as pres\u00adident of the University of the Philippines. The three choirs who joined the Philippine Philharmonic were The UP Concert Cho\u00adrus (Jai Sabas Aracama<\/strong>), UP Singing Ambassador\u2019s (Ed Man\u00adguiat<\/strong>), and UP Cherubims (Ele\u00adna Mirano<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Sen. Edgardo Angara carved out a place for himself in the history of music as a steadfast and generous supporter for both the PPO and the programs of the CCP. His leader\u00adship was unparalleled. He was presi\u00addent of the Senate of the Philippines, chairman of the Philippine National Bank, secretary of Agriculture, sena\u00adtor from 1987-1998 and 2017-2018, and special envoy to the European Union from 2017 to 2018.<\/p>\n

For Sen. Angara\u2019s work to revive a sense of nationhood and social co\u00adhesion, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts granted him the \u201cDangal ng Haraya\u201d award, the NC\u00adCA\u2019s highest distinction given to an individual for his significant contribu\u00adtion to arts and culture. Also notable was Sen. Angara\u2019s concern for the welfare of the PPO members, with gratuity funds for retiring mem\u00adbers. Six months before he passed, he awarded two PPO members with grants to attend a master class in the US and a doctorate degree in music at UP. As patron of the arts and culture, he kept alive public appreciation for music and performing arts.<\/p>\n
