LATIN NIGHT

LATIN NIGHT

Manila’s sought-after master of ceremony Johnny Litton scored another success with a Latin American-themed birthday party at the Grand Ballroom of The Bellevue Manila. A gentleman with a big heart and an incredible sense of humor, Johnny continues to celebrate each year with dazzling concepts. It drew the A-list revellers from the diplomatic, business, society, and the art world. Chairman Johnny Chan with sons Patrick, managing director of the Bellevue Hotels and Resorts, Ryan of B Hotels, and Dustin of The Bellevue Resort welcomed the well-heeled invitees.

The moment Rupert and I entered the foyer, we felt the Latin American vibes with their mesmerizing colors, exuberance, and eye-catching garden decor. Cocktails were held at the lobby where a life-sized replica of Johnny in his signature suited attire was positioned at the stairs. A multi-sensory delight with lively Latin music and drumming, costumed dancers parading from top of the staircase created an allure for endless photo-op for all the selfie lovers. The impressive roster of Latin American ambassadors in the Philippines, led by Ambassador Rolando Alvarado of Panama, included: Ambassador Rodrigo Souza of Brazil, Ambassador Capaza Gonzales of Venezuela, Ambassador Jose Villaroil of Chile, Ambassador Victor Jaramillo of Colombia, Ambassador Gerardo Arredondo of Mexico, and Ambassador Jose Ureta of Argentina. Each country had a booth in the ballroom serving cocktails, food, and items that represented their respective country.

T h e originality of executive chef Stephan Oppenhagenshone was shown through the authentic specialties and diverse menu of the participating Latin countries. To add to the evening’s festivities were several dance numbers from the TeMaeva Dance Group, the 8 Movements Dancesport, Casayawan Dance Group, and the Escola Samba de Manila, who performed traditional Latina dances. Paula Diaz rendered a few numbers, capped by Asia’s songbird Pilita Corales. The finale was the awarding of the best dressed in Latin-inspired attire. The winners of the Carnival Queens were Consul Mellie Ablaza, Czarina Ablaza-Syquia, Connie Haw, Dr. Elsie Pascua, Rachel de Guzman, Crystal Jacinto, and Grace Gobing.
