All day all night party
Don Ado Escudero’s birthday bash at his turn-of-the-century hacienda
People have great admiration for those who, despite age, just keep on going, imbued with a personal mantra of work and fun, of sharing, and more. A role model, a gentleman of unwavering passion, and with laughter as big as his heart, Don Ado Escudero celebrated his 85th birthday at his famed Villa Escudero hacienda. Known for its idyllic setting and graceful ambience, with its babbling brooks and turn-of-the-century house, this year Ado celebrated with an “All Day All Night, Come As You Are and When Convenient Party.”
It was a breakfast till dinner affair, which started with mass celebrated by Fr. Mercurio at 8 a.m. and which culminated in a fashion show and entertainment numbers at midnight. All these and Ado hardly showed signs of exhaustion. For the past 30 years Ado has celebrated his milestones, throwing parties, and sparing no expense in the pursuit of fantasy, with doses of opulence. The genteel man said: “All my parties have been very well attended by friends who enjoy the same things in life. Since I met Patis Tesoro in 1980, we’ve thrown themed parties and most of them required costumes.” His curiosity knew no limits and in his moment of nostalgia he recounted his past legendary parties—the Hawaiian Grand Luau, Hollywood Take It Away, The Phantom of the Opera, Archie Comic Book, South Pacific, the Carnival in Rio, and the most recent before this year’s bash, the Carnival of the Four Continents.
The fresh country air and sunlight contributed to a relaxing atmosphere, and this feeling of well-being is what beckons one to Villa Escudero. In the middle of this hacienda stands his home filled with rich and varied antiques and heirlooms, with his collection of pigs, and with many art and decorative pieces. Ado has found the best of all possible worlds with his objets d’art, chandeliers, exquisite porcelain, silver and crystal, surrounded with treasures that have all appreciated over time.
A sumptuous dinner menu was prepared at the adjacent tent. After dinner invitees proceeded to Ado’s house for an impromptu program, headed by the indefatigable Imelda Marcos. Emcee was the professor Al Genove. Renowned pianist Ingrid Santamaria rendered two concertos and accompanied Ado’s nephew AP Limpot, who played the violin. Not to be missed were musical numbers by Tony Marino, former star of The King and I in Australia and Diva Dulce, who captured everyone’s attention with his outstanding repertoire. The group of Ima Castro, Lloyd Umali with Zaldy Villapando provided the music. The fashion show was a gift of Ado’s friend Ramon Sabella who happens to be one of the biggest retailers of women’s wear at SM.
Ado is incredibly inspirational. He continues to do his part to make the world a better place. He assists in the restoration of their cathedral and other edifices of ancient structures. He has been part of the grand Marian procession of Intramuros, from its founding to the present, and is involved in ongoing activities and community projects. He manages Villa Escudero Plantations and Resort, as he feels a personal commitment to the community with his hundreds of employees. A workaholic, he is involved with the “Samahan ng Mahal na Pasyon” for the perpetuation of the Holy Week processions in San Pablo City, Laguna. Ado’s presence at Villa Escudero is an irresistible magnet to his countless friends, and no matter how late it was, we left this sanctuary with a fond memory.
